Synopsis

Set in a Chicago junk shop in the mid 1970s, David Mamet’s acclaimed 1975 play American Buffalo tells the story of three desperate misfits who plan to steal back a coin they think was undersold for its value.Young Bobby, who hopes to impress his mentor/thrift shop owner boss, is eager to take part. But Donny’s friend Teach schemes to shut Bobby out. As they struggle to pull off the heist, Don and Teach begin to question the other’s motives. When Bobby returns with a coin in hand, all hell breaks loose. The action of the play takes place all in a single day in Don’s Resale Shop.

Roles for Three Men

• Don “Donny” Dubrow (40s/50s):

The owner of Don’s Resale Shop, “Donny” is a paternal, well-intentioned, yet morally compromised shopkeeper, who mentors his young employee Bobby. Feeling cheated after selling a rare buffalo-head nickel too cheaply, he conspires to steal it back and enlists Bobby’s help to carry it out.

• Walter “Teach” Cole (50s/60s):

A poker buddy and regular associate of Donny’s, “Teach” is paranoid, volatile, aggressive, and insecure. He bullies his way into Donny’s coin-theft scheme, pushes Bobby out, rationalizes every deceit as legitimate “business,” and proves himself capable of violent rages.

• Bob/”Bobby” (20s to mid-30s):

Don’s young employee, gofer and protégé, Bobby is vulnerable, struggling with substance abuse and desperate for Don’s approval. After being cast aside by Teach during the planning of the heist, Bobby returns with a different nickel, provoking Teach to suspect that he and another conspirator have betrayed Don and Teach.

NOTE: Auditioners will be reading scenes from the actual script. Page and scene information will be posted on this website prior to the audition dates and provided at the auditions.
