Featuring Violinist Moises Cunha and Pianist Justin Snyder, Americana is composer Tucker Fuller's four-movement meditation on moments of instability in American life. Each movement inhabits a different decade, exploring periods when the nation found itself caught between hope and uncertainty, prosperity and suffering, desire and fear. While rooted in specific historical moments, the work is less concerned with historical narrative than with the emotional landscapes that emerge when familiar structures begin to fracture.

The first movement looks toward the 1930s and the years of the Great Depression. Towering skyscrapers and symbols of modern progress rise above a society struggling to survive. The music contrasts grandeur with fragility, depicting a world where dreams of limitless growth coexist with widespread hunger and economic despair.

The second movement turns to the AIDS crisis of the 1980s. It is a movement of longing and isolation, imagining both the experience of a closeted individual and that of someone living under the shadow of infection. Desire becomes inseparable from fear. Tender melodies reach outward only to withdraw again, expressing the painful yearning for intimacy, touch, and human connection in a time when such closeness could feel dangerous.

The third movement is set at a summer gathering in the 1970s. Across a crowded room, two people exchange glances and begin a tentative flirtation. Beneath its playful surface, however, lies a persistent unease. The decade stood at the crossroads of recovery and exhaustion, marked by the aftermath of recession and the closing chapters of the Vietnam War. The music dances between optimism and uncertainty, capturing a moment when possibility and anxiety share the same space.

The final movement brings the work into the present. Inspired by the turmoil of the past year, it reflects on a society marked by fear, division, displacement, and violence. Images of immigration raids, families torn apart, and the deaths of innocent civilians become the backdrop for a landscape that feels increasingly unstable. The music grows restless and volatile, portraying a world that seems perpetually on the brink of combustion.

Together, these four movements form a portrait of America not as a fixed ideal, but as a nation continually navigating moments of crisis and transformation. Through personal stories of survival, longing, resilience, and loss, Americana asks what it means to remain human when the ground beneath us feels uncertain. Philip Glass' Sonata for Violin and Piano opens the program.
