Dir. Mehrdad Oskouei & Soraya. 2025, 96 mins. Iran, Turkey, Greece. DCP. In Farsi with English subtitles. A moving, artful, and surprising collaboration between the legendary Iranian filmmaker Mehrdad Oskouei and a whip-smart teenage artist, A Fox Under a Pink Moon follows Afghani refugee Soraya’s relentless efforts to escape an abusive marriage in Tehran and join her mother in Austria. But rather than the cliché frame of master and muse, Oskouei remotely directed Soraya to tell her own story, from both her reality and her imagination. In addition to many attempts to cross the border into Europe, Soraya escapes and resists oppression through her dark and unfettered artwork, which often features an enigmatic fox and weeping clown. It is her work that gives the film its shape and aching intimacy, from the watercolor animations derived from her drawings, to her smartphone video diaries tracking five years of survival separated from her home and loving family. Poetic and raw, A Fox Under a Pink Moon is as electric and courageous as its heroine, making it easy to see why this film won awards all over the world and is in serious discussion for the 2027 Oscars Awards.
