Dir. Steve Gordon. 1981, 97 mins. U.S. 35mm. With Dudley Moore, Liza Minnelli, John Gielgud, Geraldine Fitzgerald, Jill Eikenberry. This madcap New York City farce stars Dudley Moore as an alcoholic playboy man-child who has lived off the millions inherited from his parents and has never had to work a day in his life. Aided in all endeavors public and private by his endlessly sharp-tongued butler Hobson (an Oscar-winning John Gielgud, delivering one incredible one-liner after another), Arthur lives in a cocoon of privilege, until he falls hard for Liza Minnelli’s down-to-earth working-class shoplifter Linda Marolla. What Arthur lacks in sensitivity towards its character’s drinking problem, it more than makes up for in its perfect mix of sweetness and laugh-out-loud hilarity, and Moore and Minnelli make one of the 1980s’ greatest and most unexpected romcom couples.
