Dir. Vincente Minnelli. 1960, 126 mins. U.S. 35mm. With Judy Holliday, Dean Martin, Fred Clark, Jean Stapleton. In his delightful musical pairing with Oscar-winner Judy Holliday and superstar Dean Martin, Minnelli directs an effervescent New York–set romantic comedy about a nosy Brooklyn telephone operator for an answering service who finds herself falling for a poor wannabe playwright while also trying to play matchmaker to her other clients. With her tender, metropolitan vivaciousness, Holliday is as note-perfect as always, while the film is also a showcase for the musical talents of composers Betty Comden and Adolph Green, from whose Broadway hit the show is adapted. Bells Are Ringing would be the final musical from the famed MGM Freed Unit, and earned Minnelli a DGA nomination for Best Director.
