Dir. Vincente Minnelli. 1954, 108 mins. U.S. 35mm. With Gene Kelly, Cyd Charisse, Van Johnson, Elaine Stewart. One of the first Cinemascope, Technicolor musicals, this MGM extravaganza, adapted from the stage by the great Lerner and Loewe, is an enchanting fantasy in which a pair of New Yorkers find themselves in a magical Scottish town called Brigadoon, which only materializes once every hundred years. No inhabitant of the town can cross the border to leave, or else the town will disappear—but a stranger can stay if he falls in love with someone there. Of course, complications ensue when Gene Kelly’s Tommy finds himself pining for the beautiful Fiona (Cyd Charisse). Featuring splendidly beautiful dance sequences and gorgeous set design, Brigadoon is a poignant supernatural romance about the aching ephemerality of existence.
