Goat Balls, a Brooksian, Neo-Noir musical based on the true story of J.R. Brinkley, an American con man who claimed to cure male impotence by implanting goat glands into patients. Though lacking legitimate medical credentials, Brinkley gained national and international fame through aggressive radio marketing, prescribing elixirs over the airwaves and helping to popularize country music by broadcasting it widely on his station. Eventually, the American Medical Association exposed him as a fraud, and he faced numerous lawsuits, dying bankrupt in 1942—but not before making a serious run for the Governor of Kansas. “Doc” Brinkley is remembered as one of the most notorious medical quacks in U.S. history.
