Dir. Stanley Kubrick. 1999, 159 mins. 35mm. U.S. With Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Sydney Pollack, Marie Richardson, Vinessa Shaw, Todd Field, Alan Cumming, Sky Dumont. Met with befuddlement upon release, the final film by Stanley Kubrick is now rightly recognized as one of the great works of modern cinema—as mysterious and perfectly unsettled as ever. Kubrick spent a record-breaking 400 days shooting this beguiling, New York–set erotic puzzle, for which he meticulously recreated Greenwich Village on a British soundstage. Then a Hollywood power couple, Cruise and Kidman star as wealthy Manhattan doctor Bill Harford and his gallerist wife Alice; after she confesses erotic fantasies involving another man, he embarks on a surreal psychological odyssey that sends him into the depths of the city’s shadowy sexual underworld at Christmastime. The film’s centerpiece is an elaborate masked orgy that has the uncanny feel of a dream.
