Dir. Stanley Donen. 1975, 118 mins. U.S. 35mm. With Liza Minnelli, Burt Reynolds, Gene Hackman. In this late-period Stanley Donen comic drama, an off-kilter crime romance set during Prohibition, Minnelli plays an American living in Tijuana who is desperate to get back the U.S. after her husband dies. She ends up falling in with a couple of low-level criminals (Reynolds and Hackman), getting swept up in immigrant-smuggling, rum-running, and a surprising menage-a-trois. Donen’s over-budget production proved a box-office disappointment upon release, yet this handsomely mounted, tonally wild seventies studio whatsit, dubbed “a very unusual movie” in its own marketing, and starring cinema’s least likely threesome, is undoubtedly worth a second look.

Tickets: $17.50 / $12 senior and students / $10 youth / $7 MoMI members. There is a $1.50 transaction fee per ticket for all online purchases. The cost of admission may be applied toward a same-day purchase of a membership.
