Dir. Walter Murch. 1985, 113 mins. U.S. 35mm. With Fairuza Balk, Nicol Williamson, Piper Laurie, Jean Marsh, the voice of Brian Henson. In his only directorial feature, legendary sound editor Walter Murch (American Graffiti, Apocalypse Now) fashioned a brilliant, surreal sequel to The Wizard of Oz featuring astonishing, Oscar-nominated visual effects. The story picks up years later, when Dorothy (Fairuza Balk), haunted by dreams of Oz, is whisked back to the enchanted land, which has fallen into disrepair because of an evil witch and the dastardly Nome King. Controversial upon its release for its dark tone and spooky imagery, this Disney-produced fantasy has acquired a cult following for its uncompromised vision.
