Dir. Vincente Minnelli. 1952, 118 mins. U.S. 35mm. With Kirk Douglas, Lana Turner, Dick Powell, Gloria Grahame. Two years after All About Eve, Minnelli directed this similarly barbed poison pen to show business, though the target this time was Hollywood. Douglas stars in one of his nastiest roles as the detestable, cynical producer Jonathan Shields, remembered with zero fondness by lovers and colleagues in an invigorating flashback structure. One of Minnelli’s greatest melodramas—and one of the most caustic films Tinseltown ever made about itself—The Bad and the Beautiful won five Academy Awards, for its screenplay, cinematography, art direction, costume design, and best supporting actress for Gloria Grahame in a small but memorable role.
