Dir. Vincente Minnelli. 1965, 117 mins, 35mm. With Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Charles Bronson, Eva Marie Saint. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton were at the height of their massive fame—and one year before Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?—in this elegant and sudsy romance set in the free-thinking artistic environs of Big Sur, California, in the mid-sixties. Taylor plays a single mother and artist taking care of a troubled preteen son, and Burton is the married headmaster of a religious boarding school where her son is court-ordered to attend. Despite her nonconformist spirit and his rigid orthodoxy, the two eventually fall in love. With its lush coastal imagery and smash, Oscar- and Grammy-winning song “The Shadow of Your Smile,” The Sandpiper was a late-career box-office triumph for Minnelli.
Tickets: $17.50 / $12 senior and students / $10 youth / $7 MoMI members. There is a $1.50 transaction fee per ticket for all online purchases. The cost of admission may be applied toward a same-day purchase of a membership.
