STG’s Broadway + Performing Arts Workshop Series (BPAWS) is a monthly series of workshops featuring local, national, and Broadway guest artists for young aspiring dancers. Workshops are held throughout the season and are designed to provide dancers with access to professional artists, training, and performance-related learning opportunities.

Join us for a special Butoh Masterclass led by Semimaru, Artistic Director of Sankai Juku, one of Japan’s most internationally acclaimed contemporary dance companies.

For more than five decades, Sankai Juku has stood at the forefront of Butoh, creating works of extraordinary visual beauty, meditative power, and emotional resonance. Founded in Tokyo by legendary choreographer Ushio Amagatsu, the company has captivated audiences in more than 700 cities worldwide with its distinctive approach to movement and theatrical imagery.

In this workshop, participants will have a unique opportunity to explore the principles of Butoh, a Japanese dance form emphasizing physical expression, body awareness, and the relationship between movement, space, and the surrounding environment.

This workshop is intended for intermediate to advanced dancers and performing artists, ages 14+ and adults.

Presented in connection with Sankai Juku’s performance of KOSA – Between Two Mirrors at the Moore Theatre in November 17, 2026.

Instructor Bio:

Semimaru is a founding member and current Artistic Director of Sankai Juku, the internationally renowned Japanese Butoh dance company established in 1975 by Ushio Amagatsu.

Since the company’s founding, Semimaru has participated in its artistic activities and international performances. In 1985, he began his solo career, and in 1990, he established Kokutoin, an independent Butoh performance group.

Since 1999, he has maintained an atelier in the Kurobe River region of Toyama Prefecture, Japan, where he conducts Butoh workshops and performances, mentoring the next generation of artists.

Following the passing of founder Ushio Amagatsu in 2024, Semimaru assumed leadership of Sankai Juku, continuing the company’s artistic legacy.
