YOU’RE JUST A PLACE THAT I KNOW
Book, Music, and Lyrics by Adrian Glynn McMorran With Marlene Ginader, Chelsea Rose Winsby, and Sally Zori
ABOUT THE SHOW
You’re Just a Place That I Know is a remarkable theatrical concert based on his album of the same name. It traces the history of JUNO-nominated singer-songwriter Adrian Glynn McMorran McMorran’s Ukrainian grandparents, who left their homeland during World War II to begin life anew in Montreal.
The show powerfully evokes questions of ancestry and generational connection through song and story, both from McMorran and other members of the diverse 7-piece band, while a multigenerational choir fills the stage.
McMorran leans into the details of his grandparents’ story, from his 16-year-old grandmother being forced by Germans from her Carpathian village into indentured abour a thousand kilometers away to his grandfather folk-dancing to win cigarettes from impressed Allied soldiers in a refugee camp. But he realizes there was more to tell than just his own family’s narrative
“Beautiful and moving”, writes Jerry Wasserman of Vancouver Plays, “.. a testament to Canada’s cultural mosaic.. I loved this show.”
