Standing at the east end of Shijo Bridge, Minamiza is Japan's oldest kabuki theatre site, tracing its roots to the early Edo period. Run by Shochiku, it is famous for the December Kaomise all-star kabuki run and also stages kabuki, comedy and commercial theatre through the year, in a house of about 1,000 seats.
